VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Intern
OBJECTIVE: To provide a complete and professional hands-on training experience in
the field of community based corrections.
RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS: To work under the immediate supervision of identified staff member(s).
Tasks may include:
Grow knowledge of the court system and how community corrections assist in the rehabilitation of offenders.
Obtain working knowledge of district policies and procedures; familiarize self with interdepartmental procedure.
Assist in entering and updating core information into the offender network system (ICON) along with ensure case files are up to date and organized.
Prepare routine correspondence, draft reports of violations, discharge recommendations, and payment plans.
Initiate contact with clients for the purpose of scheduling office appointments or home visits while maintaining contact standards.
Establish and maintain effective interpersonal skills in dealing with offenders, staff, and the public; especially with sensitivity to people of diverse backgrounds.
Conduct room searches, vehicle checks, and general property searches as needed along with facility counts to ensure that all individuals are in assigned locations.
Collect urinalysis and breathalyzer tests as needed with trained staff supervision.
Facilitate classes and treatment groups with staff.
Gather property of offenders who are placed on escape status or removed from the facility.
Complete employment and furlough checks, along with initiating other collateral contacts.
Provide referrals to appropriate services and follow-up regarding services.
Assist in the disciplinary process by gaining knowledge of facility policy, along with hearing and investigation processes.
Participate in special projects as identified.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum age 18.
Ability to read, understand, and apply Departmental policies to a variety of situations.
Ability to travel to various locations to satisfy job requirements such as furlough and employment checks, transporting clients, participating in training, etc.
Must satisfactorily complete required application, screening, and background check.
MINIMUM TIME COMMITMENT:
4-6 months preferred.
In the case of interns, the weekly schedule is subject to scholastic requirements and will be worked out with an immediate supervisor.
