General Function:
Operates buses in a safe and efficient manner within established rules and regulations. Provides professional and courteous customer service.
Accountability:
This position reports to the Manager of Bus Operations or her/his designee.
Position Requirements - Essential Functions:
The physical and other demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Operates a passenger bus generally over a prescribed route.
- Operates the bus safely and according to GBT, local, state, and federal regulations.
- Reports to garage before scheduled departure time, unless making relief at an alternate location.
- Obtains route assignment and performs required vehicle inspections completing driver defect card by observing any defects and checks operating systems and brakes.
- Professionally and with high quality customer services, provides passengers and the general public with accurate information regarding GBT services.
- Communicates with a central dispatch/communication center all information pertinent to the safe and expeditious movement of the bus.
- Immediately and accurately reports to the central dispatch/communication system all unusual incidents and accidents.
- Accurately and according to GBT rules, prepares written reports on incidents, accidents, and vehicle defects, and other written reports as directed, requesting dispatch, or other service as needed.
- Maintains a schedule according to established time points and established running times, over a specific route.
- Monitors the fare box, enforces fare policies, addresses fare irregularities; issues, validates, and accepts transfers according to regulations, answers questions about fares, routes and service.
- Completes driver observation card at completion of shift, noting items, customer complaints, or comments. When returning, stops bus at vault pull area, awaits probing and proceeds to the garage.
- Interacts with fellow operators, supervisors, and other company officials in a professional manner.
- Represents the company in litigation involving accidents as needed.
- Performs other job-related duties which are in keeping with the goals and objectives of GBT.
- Attends training sessions and safety meetings as well as other meetings as required or directed.
- Keeps informed about GBT activities and monitors GBT informational postings.
- Provides constructive feedback regarding improvements to the GBT service.
- Conducts pre-trip inspection by walking around bus to observe and assess any visual defects and checks operating systems-brakes, horn windshield wipers, lights, first-aid kits, emergency and door operating devices before starting trip. Checks with dispatch operation on two-way radio, and other items.
- Follows instructions of supervisors and management.
- Conducts other duties as assigned.
Requirements - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to communicate verbally, and in writing in English in a logical manner to complete reports, assignment sheets, other documents and forms.
- Must have the ability to compute basic arithmetic, and tell time accurately.
- Must possess good oral communication skills to accurately relate information to the communication center, public or management personnel.
- Must possess good interpersonal skills to interact positively with other Operators, management staff, passengers, and the general public.
- Must be able to learn to safely and defensively operate a transit vehicle.
- Ability to drive a transit vehicle in a safe and defensive manner.
- Must be able to work independently, and must be willing to work shifts from day to night and operate seven days a week, including holidays, weekends, split shifts.
· Education:
Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
Must Meet All Licensing Requirements.
- CT Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Classification: A or B
- Endorsements: PF, PS, PA or PV
- Current driver’s history with no more than two moving violations in two years
- Possess verifiable work history
- Must pass a drug screening
- Must be able to work eight consecutive weeks in paid training
- Must be able to work during our hours of operation
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The employee will be required to work in all types of weather conditions. May be required to operate a transit vehicle up to 10 hours. The employee must be able to pull a 20-pound tension cord and to be able to safely board and alight a transit vehicle and to sit for a long period in a seat fastened with a seat belt. The employee must be able to assist passenger evacuating during any potential emergency inclusive of wheelchair passengers.

Uses safety equipment and protective clothing as appropriate and necessary. Maintains good housekeeping habits in work area to avoid injury to self or others. Immediately reports to supervisor or risk manager any safety or security issue, and makes recommendations for improvement. Observes building access restrictions and locks doors when not present. Knows the nearest two safety exits and participates in safety drills.
