Diesel Mechanic  (Full Time)
Location: Bridgeport

Mechanic 1 - Starting at $35.90/hr

Mechanic 2 - Starting at $32.79/hr

General Function:

Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Greater Bridgeport Transits buses, trucks, automobiles, heavy and light equipment, both diesel and gasoline powered, and other mechanical equipment.

Accountability:

This position reports to the Lead Foreman and Foremen. May assist and/or supervise lower classification maintenance employees.

Position Requirements:

1. Performs any and all work of repair and replacement on a motor vehicle without requiring direction of supervision. This job requires a skilled craftsman of intelligence and ability capable of adequately servicing all vehicles assigned for work by the Authority.

2. Advises Foremen on ay needed repairs to equipment. Assists in the establishment of priorities for planned maintenance and emergency repairs. Plans ad organizes work using repair manuals, diagrams and experience.

3. Inspects, adjusts, repairs and replaces components, parts and safety devices in GBT vehicles.

4. Operates vehicles (buses, trucks, automobiles, fork lift) and equipment (including, but ot limited to bus lifts, floor jacks, tire machines, steam cleaner, sand blaster and parts washer.)

5. Uses diagnostic equipment (laptop computer, hand held readeters, etc.) to analyze, test, diagnose and monitor vehicle and equipment functions.

6. Performs preventive maintenance on GBT vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to brakes, suspension components, safety systems, electrical systems, engines and transmissios, component overhauls and bus specific systems (doors, seats, wheelchair lifts, fareboxes, HVAC) and similar mechanical work.

7. Maintains records of all maintenance activities performed.

8. Other duties as assigned by the Lead Foreman or Foremen.


Requirements:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Must have a high school diploma or GED.

Must be able to acqire and maintain a commercial drivers license and be able to oper Greater Brideport Transit equipment.

Must have at least five years experience in a related automotive field. (Employment involving the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, including diesel engines and a automotive trade school diploma is preferred.)

Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and equipment usual to automotive and heavy equipment repairs.

Basic theory and operation of engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, electricity, pneumatics and hydraulics.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Ability to give and receive written and verbal instructions.

Ability to make decisions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship.s

Possess oral and written communication skills that can be clearly articulated and understood are essential.

Uses safety equipment and protective clothing as appropriate and necessary. Maintains good housekeeping habits in work area to avoid injury to self or others. Immediately reports to supervisor or risk manager any safety or security issue, and makes recommendations for improvement. Observes building access restrictions and locks doors when not present. Knows the nearest two safety exits and participates in safety drills.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently sit, stand, walk; talk. The employee must be able to lift a minimum of 55 lbs.

While performing the duties of this job the employee works primarily in the Maintenance Garage.
