Starting pay while in the Academy: $13/hour. Starting pay upon certification: $16/hour.

 

What is the Community Emergency Responder Academy (CERA)? 

The health of our community is the cornerstone of American Ambulance Service, Inc.’s mission, as is our dedication to provide the highest quality of service and care. We also understand the time, cost and effort required to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) makes it more challenging now than ever before for people to enter the field through the traditional routes.  

At American Ambulance Service, Inc. we believe that a strong foundation is essential for a successful career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). With nearly 50 years’ experience providing EMS to our community, we are here to provide that foundation. We have partnered with the largest EMS education provider in Eastern CT to provide this amazing cooperative educational program. American Professional Educational Services has been training the community in various allied health fields, including EMT, for over 25 years. Together we will be able to provide a direct school to work program that will directly benefit our community.  

American Professional Educational Services’ Emergency Medical Technician courses have some of the highest pass rates in the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island. They pride themselves on providing comprehensive training and a challenging class for students to best prepare them for working in the field. Each CERA student accepted into the program will complete a rigorous, but exciting 7-week course of study comprised of both classroom, practical laboratory stations and hands-on training/ambulance ride time that will prepare them to become an EMT at no cost, all while earning a training wage during the entire program. Their course emphasizes the assessment and treatment of medical and trauma patients.  

Upon successful completion of the Academy, students will sit for the National Registry examination which once achieved, will also earn them their Connecticut EMT certification. The fully qualified EMT’s will then immediately put those newfound skills to work as full-time American Ambulance EMTs. 

 

American Ambulance’s EMT Position Summary: 

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a critical and essential member of the Operations team. The main role of the EMT is to provide Basic Life Support patient care and medical transportation in accordance with protocol and company policy/procedure. An EMT’s duties also may include inter-facility transports, non-emergency calls and emergency calls. An EMT uses exceptional teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills to provide the highest level of care to patients. As an ambassador of American Ambulance, the EMT interacts externally with the general public, various first responder agencies, health care providers and hospital personnel, and internally across all departments with a focus on EMS operational team members including dispatch / scheduling. 

 

Work Functions & Responsibilities 

•Respond to requests for emergency and non-emergency medical care in a timely manner. 

•Provide high quality patient care by assuming responsibilities for medical care of the patients and practice within established medical treatment protocols.  

•Comply with established universal precautions and isolation procedures.  

•Assess patient conditions and /or complaints and carries out appropriate Basic Life Support functions.  

•Assess injuries and initiates appropriate treatment under the direction of the attending paramedic, if applicable. 

•Assist paramedics with providing pre-hospital care.  

•Contact medical control as needed for medical direction. 

•Examine patients and report on patient’s medical condition to an emergency department nurse or physician via two-way radio or telephone. Utilizes the radio in a professional, efficient manner at all times. 

•Utilize medical equipment and procedures including oxygen and suction devices; CPR; and other procedures, as required. 

•Lift, move and transport patients in accordance with currently accepted practice. 

•Give verbal reports to receiving health care professionals to ensure continuity of care.    

•Obtain necessary patient billing and insurance information and necessary signatures.  

•Maintain patient confidentiality.  

•Prepare and submit Patient Care Reports.  Thoroughly documents patient assessments, care and transportation.    

•Complete Informational Reports as necessary. 

•Prepare daily time sheets and inventory supply sheets and other paperwork as required.  

•Check vehicle, equipment and supplies to always ensure a state of readiness.  

•Maintain the cleanliness of the emergency vehicle and the facility. Wash and clean vehicle and equipment. Check for and reports any damage or malfunction. 

•Safely drives the vehicle and adhere to all Department of Motor Vehicle regulations involving emergency vehicle operations.  Parks the vehicle safely and appropriately. 

•Act in the capacity of an ambassador of this company at all times.  Report patient or public relation problems without delay to a member of the management team. 

•Perform other work-related duties as they are assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

•Have a High School Diploma or GED. 

•Must be willing to obtain American Heart Association CPR Certification. 

•Must be at least 18 years of age. 

•Must have open schedule availability. 

•Have a current Driver's license with a minimum 2 (two) years licensed driving experience; excellent driving record required.   

•Must have proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

 

 Special Requirements 

•May be expected to work hours beyond their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position is often required to work during inclement weather, regardless of the organization’s operational status.  

•Must provide appropriate legal documentation that authorizes the ability to work in the United States. 

•Must provide appropriate documentation from a certified medical provider that demonstrates the ability to fulfill the duties of the job description. 

•Must complete OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Fit Test per pre-employment and annual requirements. 

•Required to wear personal protective equipment.  

•Required to complete the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course. 

•Required to complete annual refreshers and other requested testing and training as specified by management. 

•Must pass the pre-employment screening process including: 

•Drug Screening  

•Background Checks 

•Motor Vehicle Report requirements  

•Pre-hire and orientation testing requirements  

•Required to submit to pre-employment PPD, Quantiferon Gold or, if a converter, must obtain chest x-ray every five years.

•Ability to adapt well to a dynamic working environment and duties that may change with minimal notice. 

•Ability to operate computers and tablets. 

 

Physical Requirements:   

•The ability to pass the requirements of the pre-employment agility test.  

•The ability to frequently lift (with a partner) a minimum of 225 lbs or greater. 

•The ability to safely maneuver a patient weighing a minimum of 225 lbs in a wheelchair both up and down three steps without additional assistance. 

•The ability to frequently lift, push, pull and maneuver a patient utilizing appropriate pieces of equipment.  This must be accomplished in a safe manner and without difficulty.  

•The ability to lift and stow equipment in a safe manner without difficulty. 

•The ability to walk up and down stairs without difficulty.  

•The ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.  

•The ability to walk one quarter of a mile without difficulty and without affecting the immediate performance of job-related duties as outlined.  

•The ability to frequently: reach forward or overhead; squat, kneel or crawl. 

•The ability to utilize upper extremities for repetitive grasping and fine manipulation.  

•The ability to operate a company vehicle during all hours of the day or night for long periods of time in often-challenging traffic conditions and weather.  Trips will include locations throughout Norwich and the surrounding communities within Connecticut, Rhode Island and, at times, even further distances.

Working Conditions:   

•Required to work hazards situations that may include motor vehicle accidents, hazmat scenes and industrial accidents.
