Supervisor Industrial Switching - Salt Lake City, UT  (Full-Time)

Reports to: Assistant Manager Industrial Switching           Job Status: Full Time                     Schedule: Varies. Weekend duty, on-call, overtime & travel 0%

Summary:

Reporting directly to the Superintendent and Assistant Manager Industrial Switching, the Supervisor is responsible for leading NPR’s switch crews in the safe, practicable, and efficient delivery of services to our customer. The Supervisor will lead safety initiatives, provide supervision to the Salt Lake City, UT  crew, conduct and document crew job behavior observation, and coach and mentor staffs to ensure best practice safety procedures are being employed and are in keeping with NPR’s Safety Policy as well as the customer’s safety and security requirements. The Supervisor will also liaise with the customer and the other rail yard contractors regularly to ensure that our common objectives are achieved.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at NPRC are, but are not limited to:

•Assists in developing and implementing pro-active safety elements and best practices operational procedures for the switch crews including effective job briefings, job hazard assessments, risk assessments, and efficiency testing.

•Assist in investigating, analyzing and reporting on the safety of the switch crew shift operations.

•Assists with training and field monitoring of new rail crew members.

•Provides additional crew support during adverse operating conditions such as inclement weather and yard congestions; and at other times as required.

•Provides supervisory support in developing and enhancing safety systems, revising standard operating procedures and practices and preventative maintenance procedures, and providing administrative and communications support to ensure the continued safe rail operations.

•Supervisor will be expected to fill in for vacation/sick days off as needed.

•Supervisor will be expected to work some weekends and evening/overnight shifts and holidays.

•Supervisor must be available 24/7 for any incidents that may occur in Industrial Switching Operations.

•Supervisor is responsible for the lite maintenance of track structure at his location. 

•The Supervisor is also responsible for all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent Contract Services.

 

Operational Supervision & Leadership:

•Supervises the day-to-day operations of the team ensuring the necessary people, equipment, and resources are available to effectively provide safe rail switching services.

•Leads quality control initiatives, identifies, and troubleshoots problems with operations or team members.

•Builds and maintains positive and healthy work relationships.

•Coaches, mentors, and guides others to appreciate and understand the benefit of safe delivery of effective services and the achievement of work objectives during the shift.

•Acts as a leader and champion for the NPR team members.

 

Operational Planning:

•Ensures that the goals of the Salt Lake City, UT crew are aligned with those of our customer and other site contractors as directed by the Superintendent.

•Acts as a problem solver with the ability to provide common sense solutions to day to day safety and operational challenges

•Demonstrates knowledge, commitment and a passion for safety and customer satisfaction in the provision of quality rail car switching services.

•Establishes and maintains effective oral & written communications with the employees, the Class 1 railways, and NPR customers.

•Ensure that safety, performance, quality, scheduling, and customer service issues are identified and effectively resolved.

•Works hands-on from time to time to assist the crew in safely performing their duties.

•Works with the Superintendent to achieve NPR’s business objectives.

•Acts as the operational point of contact for the customer.

To perform this job successfully at NRPC, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

•Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of GCOR procedures, safe rail car switching practices and exercises an ability to see that Salt Lake City, UT crews are working safely, in compliance with applicable rules and best practices for operating procedures to ensure the safe delivery of services to the customer at all times.

•Demonstrates an understanding of NPR and customer safety systems, procedures and operating priorities.

•Ability to conduct effective job observations in an effort to correct undesired working behaviors and mentor employees to work safely at all times (efficiency testing).

•Demonstrates initiative to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload leading to safe and successful delivery of services to the customer.

•Demonstrates leadership including establishing focus, developing and empowering employees and teams, providing motivational support, coaching employees, and managing performance.

•Ability to establish rapport with people and influence opinions, attitudes, or judgements and maintains a commitment to quality and customer service.

•Ability to implement effective safety programs and conducting incident investigations.

•Experience with the operation and maintenance of locomotives or if not qualified, become qualified as a locomotive engineer/operator.

•A functional capability with computer operations including Window’s based computer environment, the Internet, and MS Office applications.

•Willingness to participate in training and learning initiatives.

•Valid driver’s license.

 

Physical Demands: 

NPRS may make reasonable accommodations may to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the physical demands listed below:

•Continuous:  Balancing, bending, climbing stairs & ladders-ascend/descend, crouching, driving, hearing & vision, reaching above & below shoulder, sitting, standing, twisting & walking, lift & carry hand tools-shovel, broom, lantern, etc. less than 10 lbs. Works with eye/hand coordination, feet with foot pedals, fingering for picking, pinching, calculator, handling-holding & grasping, wrist motion-repetitive flexion & rotation.

•Occasional: Kneeling, lift & carry backpack snow blower 20-40 lbs.

•Rare: Crawling, jogging, stooping, lift & carry knuckles & End-of Train Device over 50 lbs.

•Position will require bending, walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time.

•Be able to lift up 25-75 lbs if needed.

•May require travel to various facilities and provide additional services.

 

Environmental:

•Continuous: Exposure to electrical hazards, dust & smoke, fumes, odors, grease & oil, hot & cold temperatures, on call, works outside, noise, chemicals, vibration, toxic materials, walk on uneven or slippery surface, works with others & works with moving machinery. Money handling, calculating, concentration, perception, creativity & working with interruptions.

•Frequent: Stand on concrete.

•Occasional: Works in cramped quarters, travel required, works inside, shift work, wet conditions & works alone.

•Rare: 

 

Education and Training:

•Five (5) years’ experience in a progressive leadership position and operating as a locomotive operator and or grounds person in an industrial switching environment preferred.

•Hold with the ability to maintain all industrial switching regulatory and customer requirements and standards relating to operations at the site including but not limited to safety critical medical requirements, customer safety certifications, drug and alcohol testing, and GCOR certification.

•Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
