Job Title: Railcar Repair Shop Lead                         Department: Mechanical Car                        Division: Northern Plains Rail Services

Reports to: Facility Manager Car Repair                 Job Status: Full Time                                  Schedule: Varies. M-F, 12:00 PM-10:00 PM with additional hours as necessary

Summary:

At Northern Plains Rail Companies, this position supervises, and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of railcars: Assigns duties to workers based on worker abilities and nature of required repairs. Observe progress of work to ensure adherence to prescribed procedures and adherence to company and governmental standards. Monitors stock of replacement parts to detect shortages of parts needed for future repair and maintenance, and requisitions needed parts. Examines shop equipment, such as welding machines to verify that equipment meets safety and performance standards. Patrols work sites to observe methods, to inspect safety equipment, and to ensure compliance with company, union, and governmental regulations.

                                                                                              

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at NPRC are, but are not limited to:

  • The duties will also include ordering parts and materials for overall car shop repairs.
  • Assist Facilities Manager Car Repair with the maintenance and up-keep of all equipment and tools used by Car Shop forces.
  • Ensure that all applicable safety rules and AAR/FRA regulations are in compliance.
  • Directly involved in quality control.

 

Competencies:

To perform this job successfully at NPRC, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

  • 3 years’ prior work experience.
  • Must possess leadership and above average supervisory ability.
  • Effective training methods on a one to one basis.
  • Must have specific job knowledge in the area of assignment.
  • Torching, welding & fabricating.
  • Equipment operations.
  • Able to promote a safe and productive workplace.

 

Physical Demands:

NPRC may make reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the physical demands listed below:

  • Frequent: Bending, balancing, walking, standing & sitting. Lift & carry less than 20 lbs.
  • Occasional: Push up to 50 lbs., pull up to 100 lbs., entraining, detraining railway equipment, kneeling, squatting, working in restricted areas, climb 12 feet or above, work indoors & outdoors, exposed to heat & cold, welding & torch cutting. Be able to lift 25-75 pounds when necessary. Climb ladders/steps – stand on a high structure, be in a confined space, walk on uneven ground.

 

Environmental:

  • Continuous: Standing on concrete.
  • Occasional: Vibration, noise, hot or cold temperature extremes (wash rail cars outside in all weather conditions), work at heights, uneven surfaces, shift work, paperwork, travel, smoke & dust, paint, cramped quarters & moving machinery.
  • Must wear correct PPE and masks for identified jobs and painting.

 

Education and Training:

  • GED or higher.
  • 2 years industry foreman/supervisor preferred.

 

Other:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to travel periodically.
  • Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
