BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:
After you complete the preliminary background forms, the application booklet, sign all waivers and provide necessary documentation, we will conduct a background investigation which, depending upon the type of position for which you apply, may include psychological, integrity, physical efficiency, polygraph, and other job-related testing to determine if you have the abilities, character traits, and skills necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
 
You may be rejected during this time, or at any other phase of the pre-employment process, based on test or interview results, background information received, or your failure to provide needed documentation or to complete testing as scheduled. 

HIRING REVIEW BOARD: 
Applicants successfully completing the initial background investigation will be interviewed by an Affirmative Action Panel (the Review Board), which will make a recommendation to the Sheriff rating all applicants then appearing before the panel. 

CONDITIONAL OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT: 
Based on the recommendations of the Review Board and results of your background investigation, the Sheriff will make a conditional offer of employment only to those considered to be the “best qualified” of all applicants then under consideration for employment.  Those not selected will be so advised. 

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: 
Following a conditional offer of employment, you are required to complete a confidential postoffer medical questionnaire, and you will be required to successfully complete a standard DeKalb County medical examination, and you may be required to submit to additional physical or mental testing, predicated on the results of that medical exam, in conjunction with other background information. Reasonable accommodations for otherwise qualified disabled applicants will be fully considered. 

EMPLOYMENT: 
Applicants successfully completing all prior stages of the pre-employment process will be offered employment in the first available position for which they applied.

Deputy Sheriff  (Full Time)
Job Type:: Deputy Sheriff

DUTIES: Conducts investigations to determine location/locate individuals named in criminal and civil papers. Serves felony and misdemeanor warrants; arrests individuals named in warrants; executes lunacy pickup orders; transports prisoners to county jail or to mental institutions. Enforces all the rules and regulations of the courtroom and/or jail; maintains safety an security of the general public, facility staff, and county inmates; escorts inmates to various parts of the jail or court facility. Processes incoming jail inmates by taking accurate and classifiable fingerprints, photographs, and personal history; collects, inventories, and stores inmate personal clothing, jewelry, and money; issues jail clothing, linens, personal hygiene/cleaning supplies and bedding. Transports inmates to and from court; provides safety and security during transport; guards prisoners in court; maintains order and security in courtrooms; searches witnesses and the public for weapons. Processes bond monies and all cash bonds; approves and arranges bail bonds. Observes security monitors to watch inmate movement; supervises inmates during visitation, recreation, and medical call; reports unusual observations to superiors. Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information by telephone or in person from inmates, the general public, court personnel, medical staff, attorneys, clergy, officers, employees, and supervisors. Conducts periodic security inspections and searches of inmates' person and living quarters for unauthorized items including weapon, drugs, and smoking paraphernalia.  Supplies inmates with meals; ensures medical attention is provided to inmates as needed; dispenses medication to inmates under the direction of physician, or nurse. Mediates disputes between inmates and/or staff member; counsels and/or disciplines inmates as required. Documents all activity conducted in assigned position; completes daily activity reports, log books, incident reports, vehicle inspection form, inmate property receipts, and various other reports and documents associated with routine duties of Deputy Sheriff; maintains files and records.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED; two years of experience a law enforcement officer and Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a law enforcement officer or one year experience as a Detention Officer III/Jail Training Officer with DeKalb County. Must posses a valid Georgia driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must pass current Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a law enforcement officer. Must be licensed and qualified to operate a firearm. Some positions may require CDL with passenger endorsement.
