DRY DOCK- MARINE SPECIES OBSERVER  (Regular Full Time)
Location: HDCC

Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Pacific has awarded DHO JV a $2.8 billion task order under an $8 billion indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ), multiple-award construction contract awarded in November 2021 to DHO JV to replace a dry dock at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility at Joint Base Pearl Harbor.

 

The Marine Species Observer will assist in monitoring for protected species, or animals federally protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and/or Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), to help meet their regulatory compliance.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Detect and identify marine mammals (such as whales or dolphins) and sea turtles, and other protected marine species such swimming near the water’s surface.
  • Communicate findings with environmental team.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS USED:

  • More than one year of marine species observer experience in the field
  • Able to identify marine species, at minimum, to type of animal (e.g. shark, seal, dolphin, whale, turtle, ray, etc.), if sightings are brief or viewing conditions are poor, or to species if positive identification is possible.
  • Understand marine species behavior enough to be able to observe direction of movement, know diving patterns, and be able to determine when an observed species has departed or remained close to the project area
  • Be able to evaluate group size to state with high certainty how many animals were observed when they are seen in a group
  • Prepare field reports ensuring accuracy and quality of work products

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess Valid driver’s license
  • Able to obtain military base access (DIBS)
  • Must be willing to work outside, days and nights

 

Starting Salary:  $70,000/yr.
