Office Hours:  Monday – Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This is a non-exempt position.

Company Overview

Community Research Foundation is an $80 million, non-profit organization that continues to grow as a leader in providing mental health services throughout San Diego County. Located in the Mission Bay Park area, our Accounting department provides support to 34 programs and approximately 1,000 employees across San Diego County in all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, billing, AP/AR, payroll, financial analysis, and auditing.

Typical Duties of the Accountant

The Accountant will work closely with the Director of Accounting - Core and will be responsible for:

  • Preparing, maintaining, and reviewing accounting records in accordance with GAAP standards, contracting agency requirements, internal controls, and company policies and procedures;  reviewing for accuracy, completeness, and conformance with established  standards;  reviewing, investigating, and correcting errors and inconsistencies
  • Coordinating the month-end close process; establishing deadlines for month-end close; accurately and efficiently prepare and analyze accruals, journal entries, and various reconciliations; analyzing information for trends and exceptions
  • Gathering details, analyzing data, and preparing professional written correspondence related to claims inquiries from contracting agency; monitoring Accounts Receivable aging and initiating follow up as needed
  • Preparing monthly and annual insurance premium schedules; performing monthly reconciliations;  collaborating with Contracts Department staff to ensure proper accounting for complex insurance claims
  • Partnering with Facilities Department management staff to assess status of complex building-related projects and ensuring proper and timely accounting
  • Determining proper accounting for capitalized assets and leases; establishing and maintaining related depreciation schedules
  • Coordinating and assisting in the compilation of documentation for various audits; preparing schedules and assisting in audit footnote preparation
  • Monitoring emerging updates to accounting standards
  • Developing and enhancing positive working relationships with peers, departments, management, and program staff while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professionalism


Qualifications/Skills Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited college or university required; solid understanding of GAAP accounting principles; thorough knowledge of financial statements and general ledger
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience working in a staff accountant level or equivalent position
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (V-Lookup, Pivot Tables); excellent 10-key skills; proficiency with word processing software, Outlook, Sage 100, or other accounting software
  • Proven strong reconciliation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard procedures; strong organizational, written and verbal communication; flexibility in managing multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to work independently with solid problem solving and critical thinking skills; proven record of initiative and follow through
  • Dependable and reliable; team player with the ability to establish collaborative working relationships
  • Ability to pass criminal/background clearance
