Pediatric Psych. RN Manager/Fulltime  (Full Time)
Location: Olathe, KS

All KidsTLC nursing positions are client/resident care oriented. The Nurse Manager is the nurse leader for an assigned unit and is responsible for management of medical care and communication of medical issues on their assigned unit/s, providing emotional and physical comfort to clients and for delivering high-quality medical services and holistic care to clients. He/she functions as part of a team intended to provide coordination of high-quality psychiatric and medical care to the children served by KidsTLC PRTF. Services are individualized and will be provided in the most appropriate setting, in a timely manner and in accordance with best practices, all without prejudice, and within the scope of the Kansas Nurse Practice Act. The Nurse Manager utilizes the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Psychiatric Nurses as the foundation for nursing practice. The Nurse Manager’s scope of practice includes, but is not limited to, planning, communication, implementation, evaluation, and documentation.

  

Responsibilities and tasks are performed under the direction of the Senior Director of Nursing of KidsTLC, Inc. Work performance is reviewed through supervision, observation, reports, and evaluations. Incumbent to this position, the Nurse Manager will be an employee of KidsTLC and will be subject to the KidsTLC. Personnel Policies and Procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The following duties are normal for this position and are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties. The duties shown are intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Other duties will be assigned and required.

 

Provide primary nursing care to KidsTLC clients:

·       Maintain a safe, hygienic, and nurturing environment for the clients.

·       Assess patients’ medical and psychiatric needs.

·       Respectfully meet the reasonable medical and emotional needs of the clients and their families or guardians/caregivers

·       Communicate and coordinate care with other members of the team (unit and nursing)

·       Attend and actively participate during clients’ bi-weekly Plan of Care calls/meetings.

·       Attend and engage with colleagues during weekly Rounds and Leadership meetings.

·       Inform Senior Director of Nursing and clients’ Medical Providers of any emergency, concern, or adverse changes in clients’ mental or physical health.

·       Practice within 100% of HIPAA and COA regulations.

·       Promptly respond to crisis and conflict with confidence and professionalism

·       Develop therapeutic relationships with the children/clients and their parents/guardians.

·       Coordinate routine, urgent and specialized medical and psychiatric care for the client.

·       Identify normal and abnormal findings and initiate appropriate follow-up.

·       Complete all documentation with accuracy and in a timely manner.

·       Contact parents or guardians for verbal consent for medication changes, to inform them of any health concerns, injuries, upcoming medical appointments, medical visit findings, etc. Document all communications in the client’s electronic health record.

·       Delegate selected tasks to licensed and unlicensed personnel within a formulated plan.

·       Provide education, leadership, and support for the PRTF staff when needed.

·       Contribute to nursing education and professional development of colleagues, new medical personnel, and nursing students in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

·       Practice and exemplify the principles of P.A.C.E. with the clients and staff.

·       Pursue professional growth as an ongoing and continuous endeavor.

·       Represent KidsTLC and its mission in a variety of public and community settings, doing so in ways that uphold the highest in professional and moral ethics.

 

Administer medications to clients and maintain medications according to KidsTLC’s Policy and Procedure:

·       Ensure medications are filled to prescription and available using best practices standards adhering to the 8 rights of medication administration.

·       Communicate with the pharmacy as needed.

·       Observe, record, report and document the mental and physical condition of the clients and any change.

·       Ensure clients comply with prescribed pharmacological therapy.

·       Notify the Senior Director of Nursing and the clients’ Medical Provider of all adverse events related to medication administration, errors, losses, and wastes in a timely manner, ensuring and completing all proper documentation.

·       Promptly contact a member of the Clinical Compliance Team when a medication error occurs that is considered a critical incident, requiring an IR for State reporting

 

Prepare assessments, treatment plans, outcomes, summaries, and discharge plans:

·       Collaborate with the client, family, and Clinical Team

·       Help develop Plans of Care and risk assessments for individual clients.

·       Complete thorough assessments, including pain, nutrition, growth, and overall wellness for each client.

·       Provide information to Clinical Team regarding concerns related to clients’ medical and psychiatric needs.

·       Maintain accurate and complete clinical documentation of care.

·       Schedule appointments at outside medical facilities and help coordinate transportation.

·       Occasionally transport and serve as the adult representative and medical liaison at clients’ medical appointments.

 

Once trained, understand, and reflect the KidsTLC Constitution and practice the principles of Dialectical Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP).

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • This position has no direct reports. The Senior Director of NursingAPRN(s) and/or Director of Medical Services will review work performance and quality. They will also provide general supervision and guidance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

·       Completion of an accredited RN program and current RN Licensure in good standing

·       A minimum of two (2) years psychiatric nursing experience with children is preferred.

  • Maintain current licensure without restriction and in compliance with the Kansas Nurse Practice ACT.
  • Candidate must have a clear criminal history.
  • Compassion, empathy, and, when warranted, assertiveness.
  • Successfully complete all required training related to the KidsTLC Nurse Manager position.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

·       Excellent interpersonal and team-building skills.

·       Excellent leadership and communication skills, both oral and written.

·       Extensive problem-solving ability for work and client issues.

·       Extensive decision-making and good judgement skills.

·       The Nurse Manager needs to be organized, detail-oriented and be able to carry out all responsibilities in a thorough and timely manner. 

·       Effectively intercede with children, families, and stakeholders to resolve concerns related to the delivery of health care services.

·       Thorough knowledge of general nursing principles and practices.

·       Knowledge of developmental and behavioral psychology.

·       Knowledge of child assessment and evaluation methods.

·       Ability to assess the physical and psychosocial condition of a child or adolescent.

·       Familiar with individual and group clinical therapy techniques.

·       Ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with children and adolescents.

·       Ability to maintain favorable relations with medical/nursing team and KidsTLC staff.

 

LANGUAGE ABILITY

Ability to read and interpret documents such as a Medication Administration Record (MAR), prescribers’ orders for medication or for medical procedure/s, lab results, Observation Level requirements, safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write nursing notes, routine reports, and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of clients or employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

COGNITIVE DEMANDS

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

 

 

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of industry specific software, industry specific systems and other web-based software programs, Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear/listen. Must frequently stand and use hands for tactile purposes. The employee must also successfully complete SCM training. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may need to initiate, or assist with, physical safety restraints.  Regular vision abilities required, including computer work.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

Residential treatment similar to those of any group home.  Stress fluctuates in this position, and, at times, the environment can be fast-paced and chaotic with an elevated level of noise and activity. The ability to remain calm and clear-headed is important.
