The  Assistant Store Manager (ASM) provides direct support to the store manager in overall store operations in an effort to achieve sales goals while providing excellent customer service to donors and shoppers.     The Assistant Store Manager serves in a leadership role primarily at an assigned retail store. The Assistant Store Manager is responsible for the management of a retail store location in the absence of a Store Manager.  The  Assistant Store Manager is being trained to become a future Store Manager, and as such, must be mobile and willing to be transferred to another store location. 




  • Maintains direct and consistent communication with the Store Manager
  • Maintains a professional and courteous attitude at all times
  • Promotes the mission and values of Goodwill and the Retail division
  • Provides customer service by greeting and assisting customers and responding to customer inquiries and complaints in a timely fashion; Communicates and works directly with Store Manager to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Assists customers with selections and purchases; processes donated goods in preparation for stocking the sales floor as needed
  • Performs duties to open and close the store, including money reconciliation, bank deposits, budget analysis, financial reports, safety inspections, etc. 
  • Assists in training, supervising and scheduling store personnel and volunteers to increase operational efficiencies and increase sales; Assigns employee work tasks and follows up to ensure completion;  Assists with completion of bi-weekly payroll.
  • Works with Store Manager to learn how to maximize and leverage donations, reviews weekly budgets, strategizes to exceed sales and production goals and control expenses
  • Prepares necessary analysis of daily, weekly and monthly financial information
  • Effectively investigates all accidents and injuries and communicates results to Store Managers; Reviews accident trends and makes recommendations to improve store safety; Maintains a clean and safe working/shopping environment
  • Investigates known or suspected security and/or theft issues providing recommendations and resolutions
  • Assists in all store salvage returns and ensures all returns are completed properly and with appropriate documentation; Maintains Kaizen standards within the production and ADC areas
  • Ensures merchandise colorization and categorization of store inventory and works with staff to maintain adequate store inventory; Processes donations to learn appropriate market pricing and merchandizing techniques to maximize sales goals
  • Attends Assistant Store Manager meetings and divisional meetings to gain greater insight and understanding into Retail operations and store management; Works with Store Manager on in-store staff meetings to convey information and motivate team members
  • Learns and performs retail audit with support and guidance from Store Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned




  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2 years supervisory experience in retail or related setting required.




  • Must possess a current valid driver’s license and be fully insured according to Maryland law.




  • Reports to Store Manager
  • Directly supervises retail store staff in various roles on shift;  Typically supervises at least 12 full and part time employees per shift.
  • Employees under scope of supervision are in same location.

Lifting up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  May be required to regularly stand for extended periods of time, walk, reach with hands/arms with full range of motion, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, push or pull.  Regularly required to talk and hear.  Frequently required to use hands and fingers to hold, handle and feel objects, knobs, keys and/or buttons.  




  • May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions.  The noise level is usually moderate. 




  • Up to 25% or working time
